Antique 1910/1920 and large side casting reel (ancestor of the fixed drum), PD Malloch, Makers, Perth. All bronze, diameter 10 cm, width 5.4 cm, horn crank handle, noisemaker pawl. The "side casting" system, invented and patented by the Scottish firm Malloch, used an ingenious process to turn the spool through 90° and transform it into a fixed spool for casting. Then all you had to do was tilt it back in the other direction to reel as with a normal revolving drum. A large thread-guide was used for both casting and retrieving, helping to avoid wigging. The model shown here is fitted with a rare removable bronze spool, perforated to lighten the reel. Subsequently, from the 1930s onwards, the spools, and even the more recent models as a whole, were made of aluminum alloy. A splendid antique model, which has retained most of its original patina. In a thick leather "purse" case.
