An old glass entomological box (26x33x6 cm), museum-style, in perfect condition, containing a fine collection of thirteen tropical butterflies belonging to the genera Salamis, Euphedras or Idea, of different species all perfectly identified. The right-hand row features four rare Salamis endemic to Madagascar. The large Idea butterflies (family Danaidae), with their heavily black-ribbed wings, are also known as Indonesian gliders, because they can be carried for hours with their wings open, without flapping, by downdraughts, and are native to the Sunda Islands, Sulawesi.
All these splendid, large butterflies with their almost transparent white wings, veined with black and decorated with spots of the same color, are native to the humid mangrove forests bordering the islands of Indonesia.
The box is in very good condition and all the butterflies in perfect state of preservation.
